Growing up as a kid, I’ve always been addressed as a girl 5 out of 10 times anytime I go out, especially by older people and some young people too.
At times, I look at myself and think, "What the hell! Are all these people blind, or what? Like dem no get eyes? How do I even look like a girl?" Some say it’s my face, lips, or my smile. I don’t even talk about it. Even recently, I used a profile picture on a social media platform, and some people started calling me "Ma." I got tired and had to change the picture so people would address me properly.
Now, that’s what we call branding. Being a boy or a man is your personal brand; being a girl or a woman is your personal brand too. Confidence, masculinity, femininity, multitasking, protection, etc., are also some of the qualities we find in ourselves which make up our brand as a boy or a girl. You decide to learn a skill, choose a style of dressing, or a mode of speaking to be your unique selling point to market your gender or name as a brand.
Meanwhile, remember, your face, stature, height, weight, etc., also make up your brand, and this, in some cases, might determine how some people see you. For example, we often view slim people as those who don’t eat much or so. That’s just an example; I sha know slim people wey chop pass me
Take the popular Apple company, for example. We all know them to be a symbol of luxury. In fact, we now term anybody using an Apple product as a "big boy." Why? Because of branding. The Apple brand has positioned itself so that what you buy from them is no longer just a product or service but rather a luxury. If you can afford any of their products, you are considered a big shot.
You see? That’s how branding works. It’s how people perceive you without you introducing yourself or how your target audience perceives what you do. Now, don’t get me wrong. Remember, we talked about marketing before? You can read my previous post to go through it again.
Branding is not marketing, and marketing is not branding. Let’s see it this way: for marketing, you’re telling people that this product A will make them rich without working for just 7 days if they get it now. You might employ marketing strategies like getting customer reviews from those who have used and tasted product A before.
Branding is about the company behind product A. If people already know that the company behind product A can definitely do what product A does, they will buy product A happily without doubts.
That’s the power of branding. It’s how people perceive and see what you do, from your color, food, fashion sense (logo, fonts, etc.). You should be intentional about it. Also, know we have two types of branding: Personal Branding and Business Branding.
You don’t have to agree with me if you don’t want to. But you’re probably familiar with the term "overhyping," and you might wonder why some popular people might wake up one day and decide to sell something, and then people rush to get it. Most of them are not even buying it because it’s useful to them; it’s just that they want to own something from that person (personal brand) or that company (business brand).
So, you see, the term branding is not a big deal at all, but it takes intentionality and discipline to create one. Now that you’ve read this far, the best way you can start your branding is by getting an explainer video for what you do, and I can help with that.
