BIAFRANS
When herdsmen stormed our villages in the South-East, cutting down our innocent brothers and sisters, leaving them to bleed out in their own compounds, Bianca Ojukwu didn’t bat an eyelid. No condolence visit to Eha-Amufu, no single word to condemn the Fulani herdsmen who turned our communities into slaughterhouses. Nothing. Just silence.
This is Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, oh! Her voice alone could have been a balm to the broken hearts of families burying their loved ones. But while those massacred many of them Catholic like her were being laid to rest in mass graves, Bianca was missing in action. Their tears, their pain, didn’t move her one bit.
Yet, the moment the Pope passed on, Bianca remembered her Christian duty sharp-sharp. She jetted off to Rome, dressed in black, face set like someone carrying the weight of the world. Chai! You could almost hear the whispers from the white dude looking at her: “See this woman! She’s here mourning a Pope in faraway Vatican, but when her own people are butchered by government-backed jihadists, she can’t even spare five minutes to show face.”
Bianca Ojukwu, what is this? Your husband, our eternal hero, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, must be shaking his head in the land of the ancestors, his heart heavy with disappointment. This is not the way. But in the end, we will not forget the devastation our enemies brought to Igboland, but we will also remember the loud, shameful silence of our own kinsfolk who turned their backs when we needed them most
